In the deep cold of Alaska winter, the birch and willow trees bend under the weight of heavy snow. This photograph was taken on the back roads that lead to our home & studio in the foothills of the Talkeetna Mountains. Near winter solstice, the sun is above the horizon for only a few hours each day. This image was taken around 6 pm as I was driving home in December. The high beams from our pickup truck cast surreal shadows down the road and into the woods, making the trees look as if they were bowing to welcome me home. Despite the well-below-zero temperatures outside, I was inspired to leave the truck to capture this photograph. A few days later we had a significant wind storm and nearly all the snow was gone from the trees.
