This painting was inspired by a photograph taken at night from the front yard of our friends' house in Hilo, Hawaii in November 2022. Mauna Loa was erupting after several decades of silence. Pele was quite active at this time with two volcanos (Kilauea also) erupting at once on the Big Island.
I have long been intrigued by night paintings. Smaller Hawaiian cities like Hilo are unique at night because all of the street lights are yellow to reduce light pollution for the observatory atop Mauna Kea. The yellow lights cast an eerie pallor over roughly paved streets, yards, and lava rock.
I used a limited palette of 5 colors to achieve a vintage feel and a sense of unity in the painting.
